A recent survey by Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service (BOKSS) indicates that secondary students report moderate happiness levels, averaging 2.63 out of 5. Alarmingly, 20% of respondents exhibited moderate to severe symptoms of depression or anxiety. The survey found that only 20% of students rated their happiness as high, with academic performance, personal appearance, and the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination being major sources of dissatisfaction.
The survey also highlighted that over half of the students exhibited moderate to high levels of self-criticism, particularly among females. BOKSS recommended that students set realistic goals and concentrate on the process rather than solely on outcomes.
Additionally, BOKSS noted an increase in student absenteeism post-pandemic, handling 300 cases last year, with 20% linked to social difficulties and poor attendance. They advised schools to implement tailored strategies for students with chronic absenteeism, including self-study options and one-on-one tutoring.
