Experts caution that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a multifaceted hormonal disorder, wields profound and lasting effects on women’s health and overall well-being. While its immediate repercussions are concerning, health authorities are now spotlighting its latent consequences, which have the potential to reshape lives over the long term.
Dr. Aashima Arora, an associate professor within the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, elucidates that PCOS, characterized by hormonal imbalances, irregular menstrual cycles, and the development of small cysts on the ovaries, afflicts women of reproductive age across the global spectrum.
The disorder, she notes, disrupts the equilibrium of hormones, culminating in erratic periods, and in certain instances, fertility complications stemming from disrupted ovulation. What draws heightened concern is its latent, future-oriented impacts, demanding heightened vigilance and awareness, Dr. Arora emphasizes.
Crucially, Dr. Arora underscores the imperative nature of early intervention in PCOS cases. She warns that permitting the condition to linger untreated not only impairs gynecological health but also elevates the risk of non-gynecological complications, encompassing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and even cancer.
Dr. Arora accentuates, “In the presence of irregular menstrual cycles, seeking medical guidance is of paramount importance.” She underscores that irregular periods, often a hallmark of PCOS, can be effectively managed when addressed proactively.
The genesis of PCOS, Dr. Arora explains, frequently traces back to the formative years of youth. She underscores the role of obesity as a significant catalyst, underscoring the critical need for cultivating healthy practices early in life. Initiating physical activities during childhood and discouraging the consumption of unhealthy foods emerge as pivotal steps in curbing the risk of PCOS, she advocates.
“In a world where well-being is treasured,” Dr. Arora declares, “PCOS stands as a testament to the power of knowledge, early intervention, and a wholesome lifestyle that can pave the way for a future wherein women’s health stands fortified against the challenges posed by this intricate syndrome.”
