Doctors treating pregnant women and new mothers may hesitate to address mental health issues due to a lack of experience and formal training, said Atlanta OB-GYN Dr. Andrea Braden. With mental health conditions accounting for nearly 23% of pregnancy-related deaths and over 75% of pregnant women experiencing mental health symptoms going untreated, Braden expressed concern over the gap in medical training.
Conditions such as substance use disorder, PTSD, anxiety, and depression are prevalent among pregnant women, yet many physicians are not adequately trained to identify or manage these issues.
