Time-Restricted Eating Combined with Exercise May Boost Fat Loss

by Ella

Time-restricted eating (TRE) is gaining popularity as a weight loss method, but its effectiveness, especially when paired with exercise, remains a key area of study. A new study from the University of Mississippi suggests that combining an eight-hour eating window with regular physical activity enhances fat loss without sacrificing lean muscle mass, compared to exercise alone. This research, published in the International Journal of Obesity, offers promising insights into the potential benefits of this diet-exercise combination.

Nadeeja Wijayatunga, an assistant professor of nutrition and hospitality management at the University of Mississippi, stated, “We saw that this did lead to more fat loss and reduced body fat percentage over time when healthy adults were following both exercise with time-restricting eating compared to those who were only exercising for at least 4 weeks.” The study’s focus on preserving lean mass was also emphasized, underlining the importance of maintaining muscle mass during fat loss.

The research team, led by Wijayatunga and Michael Hays, a tactical dietitian, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, examining data from 15 studies over the last decade on time-restricted eating combined with exercise. Time-restricted eating is a type of intermittent fasting where eating is confined to a specific time frame—typically 8 hours—during the day. This diet strategy has gained popularity due to its simplicity and adherence compared to other restrictive diet approaches that require calorie-counting or food exclusions.

According to a 2023 International Food and Health Survey, 12% of Americans have tried intermittent fasting, a figure that highlights the increasing adoption of time-restricted eating. However, despite its rise in popularity, the science behind its efficacy is still emerging. Hays noted, “For some people, this may be a good technique to help with body composition goals. It’s just another tool, but more studies need to come out to really understand how this works in humans.”

While the differences between participants following time-restricted eating and those who exercised alone were modest, the study focused on healthy, active individuals who were already maintaining regular exercise routines. In these individuals, the combination of TRE and exercise led to a significant reduction in body fat percentage, which is particularly important for those already lean and athletic.

A key concern with time-restricted eating is the potential loss of lean mass—the muscles, organs, and tissues that form the body. Lean mass is crucial for metabolism and overall mobility. “We need healthy muscles,” Wijayatunga said. “Muscles are really important for the body and for your metabolism. If we lose muscle, it may impact our metabolic systems, and it just decreases mobility overall.” However, the findings from this study were promising, showing that when time-restricted eating was paired with exercise, participants did not experience a reduction in lean mass, even though they lost body fat.

Hays emphasized the importance of combining diet with exercise, stating, “When you’re losing weight, you never want to lose lean tissue. You want to lose fat.” The results suggest that combining time-restricted eating with physical activity may offer a balanced approach to fat loss that preserves muscle mass—a significant advantage for individuals looking to improve their body composition.

Although the study’s findings are encouraging, Wijayatunga cautioned that more research is needed to confirm these results. The study focused on healthy, active individuals, and there is a need to understand how time-restricted eating would impact those who are not regularly exercising or in optimal physical condition. “That’s something that needs to be studied,” she said. “What I’d recommend is implementing healthy habits in a way that you—as an individual—can maintain, with guidance from a health care professional.”

This study provides valuable insight into the potential benefits of time-restricted eating when combined with regular exercise. While more research is needed to fully understand its effects on various populations, the results indicate that this approach may offer a promising way to enhance fat loss without compromising lean muscle mass, which is critical for overall health.
