by Ella

A new analysis suggests that alcohol-related deaths in the United States are on the rise at a quicker pace among women compared to men. This concerning trend is highlighted in a study published in the July 2023 issue of JAMA Network Open. Researchers conducted an evaluation of CDC data tracking the underlying causes of death from 1999 to 2020.

During this period, approximately 606,000 Americans lost their lives due to alcohol-related causes, encompassing conditions like alcohol poisoning, liver disease, and heart problems, among others. While men continue to experience a higher number of alcohol-related fatalities, the study reveals that the rate of such deaths among women is growing more rapidly. Specifically, between 2018 and 2020, alcohol-related death rates among men increased by an average of 12.5% per year, while for women, the annual average surged nearly 15%.
